He was slightly taken back when she said they wouldn't be spending nights together and had to physicaly stop himself from replying, holding back only because he hoped she must just be teasing in return. He couldn't help but smirk as she leaned in to bite the shrimp off of the fork, watching her intently as she chewed, slightly dissapointed as she seemed to have little reaction, suddenly he remembered her contition and couldn't stop the look of sudden realization sweep over his face. He soon refocues and coughed to clear his expression, trying to now quickly change the subject. "So, you say you were a pirate?" He asked, gently trying to nudge the conversation on, he quickly took another fork full of food and crammed it in his mouth in an attempt to let her know that he was basicaly stuffing a sock in his mouth to keep himself from messing up again. He watched her as she spoke about her work, a glint in her eye and an excited undertone to her voice, it was clear she must have enjoyed her job, but one question sprung to mind. "Well, then why'd you leave them?" It was a question that was nagging at him since she told him, seeing her back then he already noted she must have loved her work, yet, she was here, on dry land, and for all he knew she wasn't about to burn the city down and take everything....he hoped...especially since he just payed him month's rent and it wasn't refundable. He chuckled lightly at the idea, returning his full attention to Mai. [/size][/blockquote]

~~~~~~~~~~ Mai laughed softly at his reaction to her come back. In the back of her mind something nagged at her about spending nights with him. She brushed it off as she ate the shrimp. Watching his face she gave him a half smile as she saw remembrance flicker across his face. A soft laugh escaped her lips as he quickly changed the subject with a question and stuffed his face to let her speak. “I was. It was a good time, made me some good money too. Got to travel and see the world. The work was good too. And fun.” She said with a wicked grin and a twinkle in her eyes. “Met a good many people, some good, some not so good.” She nodded and took one last bite of her burger before setting it down. She chewed while she thought on his next question. Why had she left them? She wondered about it sometimes herself. Speaking quietly she gave a small shrug. She wondered if he would think her reason was silly. “I guess I just needed a change of pace.” She looked at him, giving him another small shrug. She blinked at him chuckling and wondered why. Thinking about it she didn’t see a reason not to ask him. “What’s so funny?” She asked as the waitress came back and dropped the check off. She glanced at it and then at him before reaching for it.
He just smiled and nodded as he watched her talk, chewing fast and eventually catching up on her with how empty their plates were, he ate the last bite jus about the time she finished talking, giving her reason he just smiled sweetly in reply, she had the same reason he did for stopping his non stop training, he just needed a little relaxing time, which he couldn't get if he had to get up at dawn and get back to sleep at midnight. "Nothing, haha just picturing you in a sexy pirate outfit, that's all" He said with a chuckle, picking up his milkshake, he finished it as the waitress came around and watched the bill be placed on the table.
He watched her reach for it but shot his hand out quickly, grabbing it and dragging it toward himm smirking up at her. "I got it, don't worry." He said with a smile. He opened the book but paused, her quickly unzipped his jacket and pulled it off, finally feeling the heat of the restuarant sweep over him. He leant down and began reading the bill, he opened his wallet and pulled out the bills he needed but paused, something was nagging at him. He looked at his jacket laying next to him, still feeling hot even though it was off, memories of Mai faintly as a child swept over him and he looked to her nearly in a panic. "TAKE OFF YOUR JACKET!" He yelled out, leaning over the table slightly before he stopped himself. He sat still for a moment, feeling everyone stare at him, he swallowed hard and sat back, before whispering to her. "I, um, didn't mean it like...uh it's hot in here." He said before continueing to count the notes, clearly highly embaressed at how he reacted.
~~~~~~~~~~She was glad to see him not laugh at her reason. She watched him carefully and shook her head at him grinning. Mai pulled her hand back and looked him in the eyes as he took the book. Eyeing him she watched his face and decided it would be better to just let him get it than argue over it. She nodded and smiled at him. “Thanks.” She laughed lightly and sat back, taking another sip of her water. She watched him as he took his jacket and blinked and shrugged watching him look at the bill. She blinked, wide eyed and surprised at his outburst. She sat there staring at him for a moment, before casting a deathly glare at the other patrons of the restaurant, causing them to look away. Turning back to him she laughed a little and stood up pulling on his arm. “Come on.” She said softly, leading him out of the restaurant. She pulled a pair of long black fingerless gloves out of the pocket of her duster before slipping it off. As they walked across the pier and down to the beach and docks she tugged the gloves on over the sheaths that were strapped to her wrists. She had learnt awhile back that walking around with them expose was not usually a good idea. The gloves had a slit in them where the handle of the blade stuck up, making the blade still accessible. Thinking back to what had happened in the restaurant she tilted her head slightly, normally she would feel anger towards anyone who acted so concerned for her. But when Brad brought it up it was different, there was no anger in her towards him. It was a new feeling, and odd feeling that she was having towards him. Physically shaking the thought away she looked over to Brad and smiled at him. “So, where to?” She asked as they walked side by side along the docks.

As she stood up he couldn't help but smile shyly to her as she walked to his side, leaning over and grabbing his arm. He allowed himself to be dragged outside, feeling the slightly cooler air wash over just skin. Quickly he checked down and luckily he had grabbed his jacket in the rush, a light sigh left him and he looked up to find Mai taking her jacket off. He stared maybe a little too intensly as she went about her busniess before following her down the docks and onto the cool sand of the beach, he looked out to the open ocean, taking in a deep breath of salty air before turning to Mai, smiling at her question. "Up to you really, I say we just walk a while." He said, a gentle simle on his face, he couldn't help but smile, she'd grown so much in the pat years, it was a wonder he could still recognise her now, he blinked a few times and looked away, shakign the ideas from his head, he knew full well she wanted nothing of the sort with him, if she did she would have accepted his advances when they were still young teens. He sighed lightly and stuffed his hands into his jean pockets, walking slowly along the beach, glancing back to Mai to make sure she was following. He'd some how managed to upset himself, even though he really didn't know why, but for the past few years it had been like this, he'd think of her and it would feel as though someone had knocked the wind from his chest, like they'd ripped away part of his soul, like they...he cringed and stopped for a moment, glancing at Mai before continuing to walk silently.

~~~~~~~~~~Mai paused and glanced behind her at Brad. He was staring at her and she wondered why. Shrugging it off slowed down to let him catch up to her before asking her question. Nodding Mai smiled back at him. She didn’t mind just walking with him. She didn’t know what to say to him but that was part of the thing about him. She didn’t need to talk that much around him. Silence worked well with them both. Glancing up from fixing her gloves just right she realize she had slowed a bit and let him get ahead of her by just a bit. Mai watched him carefully from behind. Something about him had changed, the way he walked with his hands stuffed in his pockets made him seem so solemn from the way he had acted in the restaurant. She wondered what was bothering him as they walked across the beach, her boots sinking lightly into the sand. Watching him from behind made her think about the old days when they had trained together. They had gone running every morning and every night and that had always been the sole thing she could never beat him at. He had always been faster than her, not by much but just enough. She smiled lightly remembering the old days and how he had been back then. Looking at him now she could see all the ways he had grown and changed with the world. She wondered if he saw the same in her, she wondered if it changed the way he felt about her. She could clearly remember the advances he had made at her when they were younger. A part of her now regretted dismissing those, but a part was glad. She had pushed them away because of their age and how much they both had wanted to do with their lives. She had felt that being with him and then dropping him when their training was done would hurt more to him. To her. She had often feared that he had become the one thing that could hurt her. She had grown cold to everything else in the world but the thought of him brought some light and warmth to a part of her. Seeing him cringe and stop for a moment glancing back at her she wished they were in their other forms for just a moment. Then she could read his thoughts. She could know what he was thinking. Sighing lightly to herself she skipped ahead to catch up to him, walking along next to him with her duster folded over her arms. She didn’t know what to say to him, she could feel his unhappiness like a thick cloud around him and it bothered her. More than she liked to say. She let them walk side by side for awhile her hands tucked under her jacket. Her mind raced about what she wanted to do. Finally making her choice, she shot her hand out and pulled his out of his pocket before she could change her mind. Her hand slid down his forearm where she had gripped it to pull it out and slid into his hand. She kept her face turned from him as they continued to walk.
He was feeling how much of a jerk he was more and more with every footstep, he could hear her walking slowly behind her and it made him feel like an idiot, here he was, finally having a chance with her again, and he was brushing her off because he still felt like a moron for asking her out all those years ago. He nearly cussed under his breath when he saw her shape come next to him, he turned his head away a bit to hide the pain in his face and sighed softly, she was so close next to him, her could feel her body heat on his side. He just shut his eyes for a moment, trying to cherrish the moment because he knew in his heart that this would be as close as they got. Then seendly something hit his arm and he snapped his head to look, he let his hand be pulled out of his pocket and felt her hand trail down to slide into his palm. He looked up to her, slightly confused, she was looking away, yet her hand was gripping his. A small smile fell on his face and he squeezed her hand gently, a little laugh leaving him. "Sorry, was I too gloom and doom?" He asked, his fingers brushing over the back of her hand, it felt so soft, even though she'd been through the same training as him and had been a pirate for an unknown number of years, she still managed to have soft hands. Brad took a deep breath, he knew what he wanted to do but he just didn't know how he could muster up the courage, even now while holding her hand he still felt all his bravory and strength fly away at the thought of asking her out again.
~~~~~~~~~~She chuckled at her softly. Gloom and doom. “Maybe a bit too much on the gloom, I don’t know about the doom.” She said softly, still not looking at him. She wasn’t sure how much of her emotions were showing in her eyes. A light shiver ran up her arm as he brushed the top of her hand. She wanted to touch more of his skin than with just her fingertips but didn’t want to take her gloves off. Well she didn’t want to take them off. A smile crept to her face as she thought about it and other things. They kept walking hand in hand and Mai heard him inhale and exhale in a deep breath. She stole a quick glance at him. Hoping her eyes didn’t show the emotions flowing through her. She saw something in his face that touched her and made her want to do something. But she had made her move. It was his turn. What happen next between them was up to him. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze as they walked. She spotted a large rock close to the shore and shifted their course slightly to allow them to be heading directing for it. Looking up at the sky she noted that the clouds were darkening and seemed to threaten them with rain. In the five months she had been in the city she had become to the gloomy weather and the rain. Though because she was used to it didn’t mean liked it very much.

His hand felt a light pressure as she squeezes his, a tiny smile crept on his face as he realised she was the one who wanted to be holding hands and was now actually fully accepting it. He galnced over at her catching her face in the corner of his eyes, a hint of a smile tugged his lips again as he looked away pretending not to see, he gulped lightly as the rock came into view and he started running senarios through his head, another deep breath moved through him as they moved toward the rock. He tugged down on her hand a little bit, his rhumb trying to drag her glove down, hoping she wouldn't realise.
Soon they arrived by the rock and he quickly moved to sit on a spot with a large area next to him for her, he leant back and looked up, seeing the clouds gather, deep with gray and threatening to break open. A little smirk played his lips as he thought about how close they were to his place, and if it started raining it was clear who's house they'd go to. He sat up straight quickly and looked to Mai, gulping deep as he tried to muster up the strength again, he had a little more confidence, but he still felt like a little kid lost in a shopping mall when he thought about asking her out. He shut his eyes and clenched his fists, he really wanted to do with, but he, couldn't He sighed and opened his eyes slowly, unclenching his fists, he looked down to the sand then looked up to Mai, now letting her see the pain in her eyes. "Mai...I have a question for you." He said softly, leaning forward now, holding his hands together and clenching them into eachother. "..but I need you to not shoot me down, if you say no...let it be..." He turned away, it was already so clear what he wanted to do, but for some reason, even now he was this far, he still wanted to pull out. "Will, will you go, um, gosh I'm not sure how to ask," He said laughing nervously and glacing up at her. He sat stunned for a second as a drop fell on his nose, he looked up and saw the rain begin to drip down. He nearly cussed again but now he knew it was his chance. "You wanna go to my place with me?" He asked, half changing the subject, but knowing his place might make him a little bit more confident. [/blockquote]

~~~~~~~~~~Mai caught the tail end of his smile and was glad to see it. Why was she so different with him? It confused her. She was so used to always having her guard up. Letting it down was hard, yet it seemed so easy around him. Like the rest of the world just melted away. How could she feel like this about someone? How could feelings that she threw out seven years ago suddenly spring back up with just his scent and a meal with him? She sighed softly to herself but chuckled softly a moment later as she felt him tugging at her glove gently. With him she didn’t need them did she? He knew what she was. That was another thing that made her at a loss for words. He knew what she did for a living; he knew all the evil that resided within her. Could he ever like her knowing that? She took a deep breath attempting to calm herself down. The wind shifted in that one moment, blowing in from the ocean sending the salty smell mixed with his scent into her lungs. She exhaled slowly closing her eyes as she did. His scent was like a drug. They were so different, yet so alike. When she opened her eyes again they flashed black for a moment before returning to their deep chocolate brown. As they arrived at the rock she let go of his hand as he took a seat. She climbed up and sat down next to him. She pulled her hair from its pony tail and lay back and letting her hair splay out around her head. She lay there staring up at the clouds watching them wondering when they would let loose on the two of them. Suddenly he sat up next to her and frowning she sat up looking at him. When she met his eyes her frown disappeared and she gave him a gentle look. What was causing him this much pain? She nodded at him telling he had a question. She brushed hair from her face and sat up straight. His words were confusing her. Whatever he had to ask he was very nervous about it. At the sound of “Will you go…” her heart skipped a beat but she kept quiet, he needed to ask. She gave him an encouraging smile as he laughed nervously and kept her attention on him. She blinked at the rain drops started to fall. ‘Dammit.’ Was the only thought that crossed her mind before she heard his question. She laughed and nodded. “You got all nervous for that.” She teased him, pushing herself up off the rock to a standing position. She jumped down into the sand and stood there waiting for him as the rain slowly began to fall in bigger, heavier drops. “Lead the way my furry friend.” She said with a grin.
He sighed in relief as she accepted his invitation, just chuckling at her comment of him being nervous, it was an understatement, he was more then just nervous, he was just plain scared. He stood up quickly and stood next to her, just staring for a moment, a smile slapped on his face by her furry comment, he just gulped and grabbed her hand quickly and began dragging her up the beach toward the road, not saying a word and hoping she'd just accept it. The walk seemed silent to him, if she HAD said anything, he didn't hear it, he was just trying to figure out how he was going to bring it up, how he would ask her, but every time he seemed to have a perfect chance, he chickened out. His thoughts occupied him the entire trip and in no time they were at his door, he allowed her to walk up the small amount of stairs to his door. He placed the key in the hole then tuned to her quickly, biting on his lip as he realized his house was still a mess. "Um, now remember I just moved in, okay?" He said before opening the door and walking in, holding it open for her to enter. He walked toward the couch and cleared it off, taking a few boxes away and placing them on a bigger pile of boxes and clothes, the entire palace was just a clutter of stuff. He cleared the dust off the tv and turned it on before sitting on the couch and gesturing for Mai to sit with him. "Make yourself at home and feel free to mess with all my stuff the way you used to when we were kids!." He said with a chuckle, rmemebering how she used to take his stuff as though they were her own, not that he minded, but it was still something he'd never forget.
~~~~~~~~~~Mai grinned as he grabbed her hand and lead the way. She had nothing to say and he seemed lost in his thoughts so she simply watched the way through town to his apartment. She wanted to remember where it was for later. He had said he was staying awhile hadn’t he? She hopped up the stairs, taking them two at a time. She watched him fiddle with the key and then look at her. She blinked watching him. Nodded thinking how bad could it be. As she stepped in she was instantly greeted with the scent of him, dust and an underlying clean smell. She grinned and walked in, looking around at all the boxes. “How did you manage to get all this stuff with how much you trained?” She asked stunned by the boxes. She’d moved in in a day. Then again, other than her books and weapons and clothes she had little else. Moving around the apartment, her eyes flickered around to all the labels on the boxes. Spotting one labeled music she moved to it and uncovered it. Sitting next to the box she started to sift through it. There were few she knew. Becoming bored with it all she put it back in the box and went to the couch, dropping down on it close to him. She looked from him to the TV and blinked. It wasn’t that she didn’t know what TV; it was just that she saw no use for it and such. She looked away from the TV and back to him. “Hey, I liked your stuff. “ She said scooting away a little so she could tuck one of her feet under her, causing her leg to brush along his. She took her coat and laid it over the back of the couch. Watching him carefully she tugged her gloves off and tucked them back into the pocket of her duster. She glanced quickly at the wrist sheaths and then back to him hoping he didn’t feel anything about her keeping them on. "So....Was there anything else you wanted to ask me?" She said eyeing him and watching his face carefully.

He watched her intently as she looked through his stuff, thankfully she didn't make him feel invaded, it was nice to see she had at least some interesting in him. He chuckled as she asked about his stuff and he just shrugged, he himself wasn't sure about half the stuff he owned, most were just stuff he bought when he'd arrived here and hadn't unpacked yet, he knew he'd need stuff, but truly he didn't know WHAT stuff he'd actually need, so he got like one of everything. He watched her flip through his Cd's and picked up the TV remote, turning it down a little so it wasn't annoying. Seeing her glance at it he could clearly see she wasn't very interested in a blinking box.
It was nice having her sit next to him and he enjoyed her scent being to close to his nose, overwhelming him in the most wonderful way, he felt slight disappointment as she scooted away a little, only to have her leg brush against his, he turned his head away for a second and coughed to try and relax himself as she asked her question, he knew she'd ask, and he wanted to answer, he really did. It was slightly odd that she still had her sheaths on, but it didn't seem that much unlike her, she always had something to defend herself with, so it didn't offend him in the least, but it did make him think that she might be thinking something like "try anything funny and I'll kill you." He just chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck with his hand, trying to look her in the eye and failing, having to look down at her hands again. He sighed, then took a deep breath. "Okay, look you can probably see that I'm a total coward and I wanted to do this in a more, I don't know, romantic way, but I just can't," He tried to explain but just ended up rambling, he put a hand on his forehead and dragged it down his face, taking another deep breath. "Why is it so hard for me to do this." He sighed softly, he looked up, taking a deep breath. "Okay, let's try again, you were my friend years ago, and I asked you something, you know what I'm talking about, and back then you said no, if I asked you again, what would you say?" He asked, he seemed happy with his way of asking, it wasn't direct, but she'd understand...right?

~~~~~~~~~~Mai raised an eyebrow at him as he looked at her and then quickly away. What was bugging him so much? She noticed him staring at her hands and thinking he was uncomfortable with the sheaths she slid them off and put them with her duster. It wasn’t like she was unarmed after all. She still had two knives at her hips and two more daggers in sheaths along her boots. She watched him carefully as he spoke. She gave him her full attention and just let him talk. He began rambling and seemed to be stressing a lot over whatever this was about. Finally he settled on something. She blinked and thought back to their childhood. There were a lot of things he had asked that she had said no to. But one question stuck in her mind. It was the only time she could ever remember letting a tear slip from her eyes. When she was alone back then, she knew he had never found out about that and was grateful. “Well…” She started looking at him until she caught his eyes. “You asked me a lot of questions back then.” She made sure to hold his eyes as she spoke. She continued, “And I answered a lot of them with no….” She stopped and waited to see what reaction would come from him. She lost her eye contact with him then as his head fell, chin near his chest. Smiling softly she reached a hand out and tucked a finger under his chin, lifting it to face her. She waited until she had his eyes again before speaking. “But there's only one question I can think of that would cause you to be this nervous…” She paused and told him with her eyes first before saying, “the answer would be yes.” She said, her smile growing a bit as she pulled her hand slowly away from him. “But the question is, what will you do with my answer?” She asked watching him carefully.
He stared on slightly disapointed as she mentioned him asking alot of questions and her almost constant answer to these, he just sighed and let his head drop quickly, he'd just about given up now, there was no chance left, she was just toying with him, then suddenly something touched his chin and he allowed his face to be lifted, slowly raising his eyes up to meet hers. “But there's only one question I can think of that would cause you to be this nervous…” He gulped softly as she spoke, something seemed different in her, there was a softness, it was drawing him in and he couldn't help but have his attention fully attached to her. Suddenly his body seemed to shut down and it seemed almost like he'd passed out, but he was sure he hadn't, something just felt...strange now, did he hear what he thought he did? "Wait...what." He whispered softly as her hand left his chin and he sat back slightly. “But the question is, what will you do with my answer?” He was in complete shock, had it actually worked? He saw the smile of her face and knew, it had actually worked, a huge smile grew slowly onto his features untill all he could do with grin at her, he didn't know what to do or say. He paused a moment before making his move, he reached out and wraped his arms around her, holding her close, taking a deep breath and filling his lungs with her scent, he couldn't believe she could actually really be his.
