Alina hadn't been down to First beach in a long time. She didn't like dealing with the sand in her shoes, the sea breeze making her hair frizzy, or the cold weather that was "perfect" for sunbathing. Still, something about this day, one of the rare sixty-degree days that the rainiest area in the continental U.S. sometimes gifted its inhabitants with, led her to come down to First beach and just sit. She took her shoes off and tied her hair back to avoid some of her usual problems when she was here.
Alina spread out a towel, wearing frayed jean shorts and a worn Mickey Mouse t-shirt, and laid down face-first. She didn't care how uncomfortable it was - the sun felt good on her neck. For once she wasn't bothered with the fact that she hardly knew anyone or she wasn't troubled with the thoughts of her past; she just enjoyed the sunlight as it was beating down.

Startled, Alina helped herself up. She wasn't sure what she had heard but from the sound of this person's voice, she sure sounded like her friend Skylarr. She turned around sitting criss-cross on her towel and saw sure enough that it was Skylarr. "Hey Skye. Long time no see. Doesn't it seem a little cold for me to get a tan?" she teased.
Alina had forgotten an important fact - it had to do with the sun, not the heat, whether she would get a tan or not. But oh well - she never really paid attention in school. One of her feet touched the sand briefly and she shrieked at the feel of it - she hated sand. "Sorry about that, she said feebly. "What brings you down here today?"

Alina carefully pulled her toes up onto her towel and hugged her knees, afraid of her feet touching sand again. She rubbed her eyes and answered what was probably a rhetorical question: "Never. It's never warm here." She pulled a hair tie off her wrist and tied back her hair, which was already starting to frizz up.
A soft breeze blew, tossing around a bit of sand. Alina was careful not to let it touch her. She didn't blame Skye for wondering why she, of all people, was at the beach. "I dunno. It seemed like a good idea since it isn't raining for once," she explained, also shrugging.
