Humans are the mortal characters in the Twilight series, and are considered as prey by most vampires due to the attractive nature of human blood and are described as being extremely weak when it comes to strength as well as other traits when they are compared to a vampires. Vampires usually solely depend on human blood as their main food supply, for it supplies them with the most energy and tastes the best. The Cullens and the Denali coven are against hunting humans, and exist on a "vegetarian" diet which involves drinking animal blood as a supplement. It is stated in the Twilight movie by Edward that "Its like a human living on tofu, it keeps you strong, but you're never fully satisfied".
In the book Twilight eating food is described as a human eating dirt. If a human discovers the existence of vampires, they are considered a threat to the vampire species and therefore the Volturi enforced a laws that the human must either be killed or changed into a vampire themselves, which is why the Jane, Demetri and Felix Volturi are sent to Forks in the novel, and in the movie Eclipse (except Jane, Alec, Demetri and Felix attend in the movie). It is also illegal for human children to be changed because they are usually dangerous and un-trainable. For the Volturi tried for decades trying to train immortal children, sadly it could not be done. For a human to be changed into a vampire, they must be bitten for just enough for the venom to set into their bloodstream. If blood is consumed by the vampire during this time, it is highly unlikely the vampire will be able to resist the temptation, and will kill the human by drinking their blood before they have been transformed. Transforming is described as the worst pain possible by all who have been transformed into a vampire. A human, however, can also be changed into a werewolf by being biten by one. If the conversion is painless, remains unknown.
