personality: Manuel is a strange man, on one hand you have a stern man used to giving other orders, on the other you have a warm hearted blowhard you wouldn't think is capable or sending entire fleets to the deep. While he was initially a merciless pirate it was Joan who calmed him down and turned him into a robin hood of sorts.
These days hes in a more somber mood, but still can find ways to smile, only it rarely reaches his eyes. Instead he likes to fill his life with riches and tries to live a life of excess. Sadly it is not able to fill the hole Joan left in his heart. More and more he finds himself succumbing to his heritage becoming a darker and more sinister person much like he was before he met her.
detailed history: Born the son of two Spanish colonists Manuel lived a hard life. Tortuga was a pirate base, home to the most ruthless men to sail the seas. And while his parents tried there best to not get involved it didn't matter. By the age of nine he was running messages between different gangs and by fifteen he found himself a crew member aboard Hades' Servant a former Spanish Galleon whose crew rebelled and turned into privateers in the service of England.
For the next few years he led the life of a piracy, looting and sinking ship after ship with his crew mates creating quite a name for themselves. During the nine years war they along with many other privateers raided French merchants in fleets. It was when they discovered a lone empty brig floating the oceans that Manuel's life changed.
When the ship failed to give a response Hades' Servant along with two other french privateers decided to board her. An hour later all three ships floating empty, their crews butchered by a newborn vampire who had stowed away on the ghost ship Manuel only survived when his charmer heritage awakened and he was able to destroy the newborn before she could kill him. Instead of them all dying a good half of the crew rose back from the dead as newborns themselves. For a week vicious infighting occurred within the ship as the crew fought for dominance all the while sailing across the sea attacking ships to sate their lust for blood. Manuel himself fought to keep himself alive in a ship full of vampires mastering illusion and telekinesis to stay alive.
For the next year Manuel used the ship to ambush opportunistic ships thinking Hades' Servant an easy target. From deep within him he felt an urge to simply destroy and turned many ships into charred husks until he learned more about his power. No longer a slave to his instincts he recruited a new crew and became a terror upon the sea. No one could stop him and he was a merciless terror, it was only when he met Joan did he change. She calmed him and eventually (much to the annoyance of his crew) changed him from pirate to Caribbean robin hood, taking from rich merchants and distributing the excess wealth unused by the crew to the poor of Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti). Needless to say he made quite a few enemies.
At the close of the 17th century Manuel was approached by a group of Frenchmen claiming to represent the crown of France to hire him and his crew as privateers. While Manuel had no intention to allow this he gave them the courtesy of a meeting on the shores of Puerto Rico. When he refused to accept their offer he walked out to find his ship in many pieces. It seems that they knew he would refuse the offer and while he was in discussion another French ship sailed along side Hades' Servant where in a single lucky cannon volley set off the ships ammunition store exploding it in thousands of pieces killing everyone, including Joan instantly. The French had hoped to put Manuel on trial but they never got a chance as a vengeful Charmer tore them all to shreds. He eventually escaped to the United States mainland, sad but seeking revenge on the French. He would be involved in World War 1 and 2 where he fought on the side of Germany which helped him calm his hatred and at the same time sate his desire for destruction.
Now Manuel lives in Seattle with a cottage in Forks, using his treasure trove hes been able to set himself up as a profitable business owner. The only real indication he was a pirate is the small flintlock pistol he has had with him since he was a boy. Its no longer a real pistol as he has used his abilities to turn it into a kind of super weapon. Despite his success his heart remains in pain as he misses Joan.
