Downtown Forks wasn't usually a place Edward or any of the Cullens hung out. Having just visited Carlisle at the hospital, Edward cringed at the idea of going home. It was Sunday afternoon, the cloud covered sky meant he wasn't at risk of being caught out in the sun, and right now home wasn't his favorite place in the world. If it wasn't for the sake of his family, Edward knew he'd be half way up to Alaska on a visit to Denali right now. Still he knew it would break Esme's heart if he were to take off...again. She'd gone through enough the first time. He'd promised that he wouldn't ever do that again, though the truth is that he wished his plan in Italy had gone right.
Parking outside the lodge, though with no real intent on eating, Edward stopped the engine and climbed out of the Volvo. There were a couple of the high schools kids around, who stopped to stare at him as he locked the car and headed away from the diner. Who was he kidding? Everyone knew the Cullens never hung out anywhere apart from the school or their home. It must have been so alien to see him pull up, especially without Alice or Jasper in tow, who had offered to come with him. He of course had made sure, in the most polite way possible, the understood he just needed a bit of quiet time.
Carlisle had offered to come into town with him on his 'lunch break'. From his thoughts, Edward knew Carlisle was concerned. He'd been spending too much time on his own it seemed, and this made his family all increasingly worried about him. No matter how many times he told them he was fine, they managed to see through his lies. Alice, of course, could see when he was about to take off hunting alone or just going out alone, and tried in intercept him. Though it had never worked.
Taking a seat on a nearby bench, Edward frowned. His life seemed so empty now, there was no Bella around, nothing to distract him apart from the occasional hunt. Buzzing thoughts drifted around him, a couple noticing the 'Cullen boy' sitting on his own, seemingly confused. The rest were window shopping, looking over stuff they needed, exclaiming at the price...all in all very ordinary thoughts. A nice change to the things he was used to hearing both at home and at school. He sighed an unnecessary sigh of relief and watched the traffic in the street go past, wondering if he might catch a glimpse of Bella, or even better, Jacob.

“Thanks Summer” Maddie said as she rushed out the door, free time… that’s what she was getting free time away from Mia. Yes she loved her daughter but she was still a nineteen-year-old girl she wanted some time to herself. Over the passed year and a half her life had changed so much. A year and a half ago she was a normal teenager… no responsibilities at all, a boyfriend who loved her and she loved him with all her heart… now she had a baby to look after and her loving boyfriend… the love of her life left as soon as he found out about the baby. She sighed as walked down the street, yes it would be easier to drive but she liked to walk.
She was dressed in a pink sports bra and matching work out shorts, her blond hair was pulled back into a neat pony tail sitting at her the back of her head. On her feet she wore a white pair of tennis shoes with a pink stripe on the sole. She believed she still needed to lose baby weight but truthfully her stomach was almost where she had been before she was pregnant, her stomach was flat but it wasn’t showing the muscle she wanted… so working out was the only way she could fix that problem. She didn’t always go jogging by herself, for Christmas Summer had gotten a nice jogging stroller so she could take Mia with her at times. Luckily though today Summer offered to babysit.
She started to jog once she got to the street; at first it was a slow pace to ease into it. Her blue eyes quickly glanced at the street to make sure no cars where coming and she crossed upon seeing no vehicles. Jogging was her releases a way to take out her stress, a way to make her feelings for Alec go away (well that wasn’t really working). She felt like an idiot for letting herself fall so hard for him… she had loved him and he had just tossed her aside when something happened that he didn’t like… Mia. She couldn’t hate Mia though it wasn’t her fault that Alec left… it was his, he would miss out on his daughter’s life… and Maddie knew she would find someone sooner or later. Sure it might take a while finding someone who didn’t care that she was a young mother. Sure most guys didn’t want children at least the age group Maddie was in. I mean what kind of nineteen-year-old guy wants to date a girl with a child? Pretty much none that’s how many… She wished there was though. Mia needed a father and she wanted to have someone to help her get Alec out of her mind.
Mia found her way downtown; she always liked to go for long jogs. She could feel the burn in her lungs and the strain start in her legs… a little rest would be smart. She stopped and placed her pointer and index finger on her neck to check her pulse, quickly she looked at her watch silently counting to herself for half a minute, and she was checking her pulse. It ended up being a little high but that was ok she would work on that later.
Her arms fell at her side again as her eyes scanned around; the only thing that she could take a rest on was a bench, although there was someone on there. She didn’t recognize who it was. She had only moved to town a month or two ago; she had lived in New York City before moving here to Forks to live in the apartment above her sister’s garage. She had no idea who the Cullen’s where well she knew there was a doctor by that name but that was about it. She walked over to the bench… she didn’t think she looked all that great and hopefully he didn’t judge her. Just by looking at his face she felt her knees go a little weak… she had never seen such a perfect face it was kind of strange to see someone so perfect.
“May I sit down?”
[/b] she asked, but she didn’t wait for him to answer, she wasn’t the type to actually wait. She was very outgoing and really didn’t care if he wanted her to sit there or not. For the most part she didn’t care what people thought unless she had just been running and figured she looked a little gross even if she didn’t. Sometimes her attitude bothered people but hay that was just how she acted. Edward hadn't really been paying attention to what had been going on around him. Fixing his gaze on the street, and allowing the dull thoughts around him fade into a low buzz of one sided converstations, he relaxed a little. People had stopped paying attention to him, and starting getting on with whatever it was they'd gone into town for in the first place. Though most were still avoiding the bench, unsure of him. No one had really gotten close to the Cullens, and Bella had been the first one to risk it. Still, they were unsure of the family. In the eyes of the people of Forks, they were odd. Hiding a secret of some kind. Of course they'd be right, just no one could guess what the secret might be.
Edward leaned back against the bench, wondering what Bella would be up to today. Would it bring her into town? Would Jacob be with her? The damned treaty meant he couldn't snap the puppy dogs neck, killing him for taking the one thing that really made sense in Edwards life and keeping it for himself. Stupid, selfish mutt. He knew nothing he did would ever change Bella's mind. She craved Jacob's company every minute of the day, he didn't have to hear her thoughts to know it. It was written all over her face.
As the wind blew through the street, Edward caught scent of something ever so mouth watering. He'd not picked up something that fragrant since Bella. Though it wasn't as floral as her smell, it was still pretty intense. Holding his breath, uncomfortably, Edward glanced around looking for its source. Who ever it was, they would make the wrong move coming closer to him, he could already feel the fresh venom building. This sucked, why did they always manage to find him.
"May I sit down?"
Edward spun his head round to look at the girl next to him, a little shocked. "Uh, sure." As he spoke he tasted the air, it was her. Great. First Bella now her. He could hear whispers of curiousity, people had noticed the girl sit down and wondered how she was brave enough to do so. She obviously didn't know who he was. Meaning she hadn't lived in Forks long. Going by her thoughts, she didn't care if he wanted her sitting there or not, which was a pretty good attitude to have. "Does it bother you that people are staring," he stated, a little amused by the questionable looks the pair were getting. "The names Edward Cullen by the way. You're not from Forks are you?"

Maddie’s eyes scanned the crowd of people…. Humm…. Everyone was looking at her… or where they looking at the guy she was sitting next to. It was kind of strange, truth is she really was used to people looking at her… hello teen mom. This made her a target for older people to look down on her, just because she thought she was in love.
"Uh, sure."
[/b] She heard his voice but she had already sat down, so it was good that he didn’t mind because she was going to sit there if he minded or not. It was just a polite thing to do asking and all. If he had said no she also would feel like she had to sit, that way she wasn’t letting herself be controlled by someone… sure it was petty but she didn’t really care… "Does it bother you that people are staring," she heard his voice again, angel like. She glanced up so it wasn’t just her thinking people were staring. Her eyes scanned the people once again before letting them rest on Edward “ Oh no not really”[/b] she stated with a shrug “I’m used to it in a way”[/b] she said with a slight laugh, being looked at when you were a teen mother was a normal occurrence, sure it wasn’t everywhere all the time but she did feel the judgment sometimes. "The names Edward Cullen by the way.” She gave a polite smile and a slight nod as he introduced his name. “Madison Cartell… umm Maddie”[/b] she went by Maddie because Madison seemed to formal or something like that… all she knew was for some reason she liked being called Maddie. ” You're not from Forks are you?" Maddie gave a slight nod, she really didn’t know how he actually knew out of nowhere but she let that thought fall to the back of her mind. “Uh no” she gave a slight laugh “I’m from New York City” [/b]sure it was a little strange to move to Forks from somewhere as big a New York City… she would have never moved here if she didn’t need the help from her sister. “How’d you guess” she asked with a sweet smile, she wanted to be polite… plus this guy was cute… his skin seemed so perfect… and his eyes. Maddie let her eyes focus on his… what color where they? She raised an eyebrow and gave a slight shake of her head letting the thought about his eyes rest at the back of her mind… right now that didn’t really matter… he was probably wearing some kind of contacts or something like that. "Oh no not really, I'm used to it in a way" Edward looked confused for a moment. She didn't seem like the Jessica Stanley's of this world, craving attention at every given moment. Then he understood. She was a single mom. Plenty of people in this world would look down on her that meant, she was young and...well...beautiful. How anyone could justify passing any kind of negative judgement on her was simply ignorant. Of course, not to give anything away, Edward pretended not to have heard any of this. It sometimes freaked people out the way he and his family acted, knowing things that they shouldn't was sometimes difficult. "Oh? Why's that?" he asked a little curiously, wondering if she might tell him the truth, though she didn't seem the kind to care what he'd think about her being a single mom.
"Madison Cartell...umm Maddie" she replied with a smile. Edward listened to her inner thoughts, she didn't like the name Madison, it sounded too formal, which was fair enough. He'd stick with Maddie, if that was what she preferred. "Well, it's very nice to meet you Maddie," he stated with a smile, and for the first time in a long time he was actually telling the truth. He didn't have to act like everything was okay, she knew nothing about him, it was a relief.
Edward sighed quietly to himself. He'd given a little too much away. Of course in her mind, New York City was rolling around, she missed it, it was different to Forks. But she'd not mentioned anything about being new here. One foot out of place and she was questioning him, she was observent, more so then Bella was. He'd have to watch himself around her. "Uh no, I'm from New York City ... How'd you guess" she questioned, looking up at him with a sweet smile. It was then, he caught, she noticed his eyes. They were alien to most humans, the golden honey color just screamed abnormal. Of course, she wondered if they were contacts. That made him laugh silently.
"Well, you sat next to me, most people, as you can see, wouldn't." He explained carefully, not getting too carried away with anything, he wasn't about to tell her the real reason why, no one knew why they were frightened of the Cullens, they just were. "And I've never seen you around before, and I know pretty much every face in Forks," he smiled, Forks was a small town, it was easy to know who lived here and who was new in town.

"Oh? Why's that?" she heard him ask, she knew that telling guys that she had a kid was an automatic turn off and usually they would casually end the conversation after awhile. She had tried to date after Mia was born but it never really worked out. Especially after Alec… Mister I’ll love you forever but not if it evolves a baby… Mister I have dreams I need to fulfill. Maddie had dreams to before Mia, yet she didn’t abandon her daughter, she was raising her putting her dreams on hold. “Young mother”
[/b] She wasn’t really ashamed anymore, sure at first when she had to stop cheerleading she was a little but now she had gotten over it. She had a one year old to take care of and such an adorable little girl shouldn’t be hidden. Maddie also knew hiding that she had a daughter from guys never worked and telling them about her never really worked… guys were just dumb that way… or at least the ones she had met. “Well it’s very nice to meet you Maddie” She gave another little smile “You to Edward” it was strange actually calling him Edward, most guys with the name Edward went by Ed or Eddy but she figured this guy was different since he didn’t give her a nickname for her to call him. It was old fashioned saying Edward… she kind of liked it… it was different she liked different. Especially with all the guys she had met in the past. "Well, you sat next to me, most people, as you can see, wouldn't." she looked around… he was kind of right people where looking at him but not coming near him “Why?” she asked as gave a slight bubbly laugh “Do you bite or something?”[/b] a small laugh escaped her lips once more. She was kidding unknown to her she was pretty much right. "And I've never seen you around before, and I know pretty much every face in Forks," Ahh was this him flirting with her? “I don’t get out much having Mia and all”[/b] she stated “And nice line” [/b]that’s one thing some guys also didn’t like about Maddie, she would call them out on little pick up lines no matter how small. Her eyes scanned Edward once again, someone as good looking as him would have a girlfriend or at least a friend with benefits… or he could be one of those weird people with no interest in any romantic interest… one of those strange hermit guys with some deep down creepy problems. "Young mother," were the only two words that fell out of her mouth. Something that would send most boys running in the other direction. In all honesty, Edward had never understood why they were all so terrified. When he was...well, human...he was at the age where most men settled down to marry and have children, it never freaked him out nor did it seem like the wrong choice. Of course times had changed, and going by Maddie's thought process, the guy had completely broken her heart, something he could relate to. "People are too judgemental, its so wrong," he stated, smiling a little.
"You to Edward". He looked her over once, she was different to the girls in town, they were either not interested in how they looked, or they looked as though they tried too hard. She'd picked up on the fact he didn't use a nick name, it was only Alice who used Eddie, and that was to be truely annoying. He liked his name, yeah it was old fashioned but all other variations just sounded stupid to him.
"Why? Do you bite or something?" Maddie laughed a little, but Edward froze for a moment, she didn't know that she was so close to the truth. Without even knowing it, she had hit the nail on the head and that scared him. Like Bella, this girl was observent, she would notice something was up if she got too close. Alice would be watching this all unravel, he was sure she'd have a go at him when he got back to the house, getting to close to yet another human and all that. Laughing slightly, he shook his head and dropped the subject.
Edward smiled, she thought he was flirting with her, but did she realise how small the town really was? "I don't get out much having Mia and all. And nice line," he smirked, "I wasn't really a line, I do know every face in town...being such a small town its quite easy," but really, he wasn't sure if he was flirting with her. With Bella everything he'd done hadn't been thought through...well not entirely. A small flicker of heat in the back of Edwards throat bought him back from his thoughts, he'd accidently let his breath slip a little, tasting the scent that carried on the wind from Maddie. He'd forgotten how difficult it could be, being so close to a human.
"Um, would you like to get a bite to eat? Must be hungry from jogging..." he hesitated a little, "unless you've a boyfriend who'd hunt me down for asking?" he grinned, looking her up and down quickly. She was the complete opposite of his ex, who was now off gallovanting around with a werewolf, which still confused him to the nth degree, the change in...mythical creatures...had been a shock to everyone, including Edward's entire family.

Maddie raised her eyebrow as Edward spoke "People are too judgmental, its so wrong," was he really just saying this? Edward looked about her age what kind of guy in this age of day would say that. Sure there were nice guys out there… or at least that’s what she heard. She had never once met one of those nice guys but then again those weren’t really the guys she was usually going out with. She tended to date or try and date the bike riding out late men with no futures. She knew that she would have to change sooner or later… none of those men ever really could make a good father for her daughter… maybe the reason she tried with those men was because she knew it wouldn’t work out… maybe deep down she still thought Alec would come back, change his ways… admit that he had been an idiot that he wanted to be a father… she gave a slight laugh to herself… that would be the day.
“Ahh you get used to it after a while”
[/b] she stated, it was true after a year she had developed a harder skin to protect her feelings from mean people, she had been called a slut, a whore, a baby maker, and much much more. It really didn’t bother her anymore well yeah it bothered her but not as much as it used to. When Mia was first born she had so many comments that she would cry almost everyday especially since it was still fresh in her mind about Alec… oh she cried fro days after Alec had left her… truthfully she still wasn’t over him… she hadn’t met anyone that could help her get over Alec. "I wasn't really a line, I do know every face in town...being such a small town its quite easy," she gave a slight laugh, even when people say they aren’t flirting most likely they are. Body language, eye movements… it was in human nature, truthfully Maddie knew she was a flirt. Even when she didn’t want to flirt with someone she did. A smile crossed her lips and she lightly licked them. As her eyes once again caught Edward’s strange eyes. “Well it is a tiny town”[/b] she still wasn’t sure if she liked the town being so small… she was used to being in the city… having at least twenty people near you on the street… Compared to New York this place was a ghost town. It was so quiet as well… she had no friends. In the City she still had a couple friends plus the mothers from her mommy and me class. In Forks there wasn’t a mommy and me class for her to make friends, and making friends with girls her age hardly ever worked out… they always wanted to go out have some fun and party… that was something Maddie had to give up… she had to grow up fast. "Um, would you like to get a bite to eat? Must be hungry from jogging..." Maddie thought about it for a second and then it crossed her mind, she had been in such a hurry to sneak out of the house before Mia saw her she hadn’t grabbed anything to eat. “Actually yeah… I forgot to eat today”[/b] it may sound like she was stupid but having a young daughter Maddie always forgot to eat, taking care of Mia was what she did mostly… days she forgot to eat were usually days where Mia was sick or having one of her moody days, or like today and trying to get out of the house before Mia saw. She was getting into the stage of Mia always wanting mommy around and when ever she saw her getting ready to go out or leaving little girl would freak out into hysterical crying. "Unless you've a boyfriend who'd hunt me down for asking?" a gently laugh escaped her lips, she really couldn’t hold it back. Boyfriend… yeah she wished. There was no way that she could have a boyfriend with the men she tended to fall for. She did get a phone call from Alec a few months back… it ended with them yelling at each other… he told her that he didn’t want her dating anyone because one day he wants to come back after he graduates college… part of her was happy to hear that… he wanted to come back but the other part of her was so angry and made her want to find someone that much more… but she felt like that was never going to happen. “No you don’t have to worry about that”[/b] she looked down at her hands then back to Edward, she was surprised someone that looked like him wasn’t running at the sound of a baby… she could also be looking to far into it… he could just be a nice guy wanting to make a new friend. That thought made Maddie feel a little stupid… she had called him out on a line when he probably wasn’t even flirting with her.
