Something to do… something to do… For once, Renata was actually searching for some kind of company. She was usually perfectly content being on her own, as one would find her most of the time. If she wasn’t with Aro, that is, following after him when he decided to travel or hanging around the doorways of the room he was inside. Not his own rooms, of course, and he often dismissed her whenever they returned to his chambers, but she didn’t even trust these dark familiar walls completely. She had silently trailed his footsteps for so long, constantly on alert for any kind of danger, that she couldn’t get rid of that slight unease that always spread through her in his presence. No, not fear of him as some of the guard held, but fear for him. Aro didn’t scare her, he hardly ever had. That was what happened when you didn’t care if you lived or died: you held no fear for the one who could decide your fate. No, she respected him, and cared for him. Although that held a different meaning to her than probably anyone else, far different.
Romance was something she just lived without, unlike a good portion of her fellow guard members. It only brought about unneeded drama and complications that got in the way of the jobs they were supposed to do. Just look at Olivia and Alec, she didn’t even need to think any more than that to want to stay away from it all. And then there were the others; too many of the Volturi didn’t even have actual relationships, they went cavorting around for nothing but one night stands (most of which, if ever with a human, ended with a little extra snack). That life never appealed to her in the least. She was far too introverted, which she would admit to, and saw no reason to waste her time with all of that. That, and the fact that honestly, Renata didn’t understand what it felt like – at least not anymore. She had never known love (at least she had never admitted it to herself), and as a vampire she had had nothing to cause her to. She didn’t even really know most of the guard – and she could only really name a few non-Volturi members, those that had left or those that were whispered of in the dark halls, who caused trouble for the ancient order but never enough to take action against.
But right now, she wanted someone to break the silence of the dark halls she walked down. As strange as it was for her, perhaps, she wanted company while the man she guarded had dismissed her. Even as she passed the library doors and had the urge to instead slip inside there, find some ancient little tome that she could pour over for at least a few good hours, she didn’t. After over hundred years, it was understandable that she would crave companionship every now and then, right? She wasn’t lonely with her life as it was, not usually. She was usually content with how she ran it, even if others couldn’t understand why she was. Simplicity was all she needed, her post as Aro’s guard was her only real purpose to living. Someday he’d find someone better able to be his guard, and she would be replaced, perhaps killed, perhaps turned out into the world she had left behind so very long ago. But she was fine with that – usually. But today… Today she seemed to be searching for something else that would tie her to this world. She just hoped she ran across someone who could give her that.
Her wandering, searching feet brought her to the streets. It was dark, and the night sky was inky black. Her scarlet eyes played across the ever-familiar café shops and shopping stores, but she did not see anyone other than a humans, and they did not seem to be anyone that she could really talk to. Too new to this life, too filled with the ideals and wonders of the world, and too focused on proving themselves worthy. And so, now indecisive, Renata stood just outside on the sidewalk, glancing around and hoping someone else might come through one of the other corner of the street, crossing her arms in front of her and shifting her weight from one foot to the other. She could keep wandering, she could head up to Volterra, but for some reason she decided to wait around here for at least a little bit. There had to be at least one other person around who was looking for company as she was – they weren’t all busy all the time.
