Finally David could be alone with this daughter. Well, she wasn’t his actual daughter but she might as well have been. Crystal was David’s niece, his sister’s fourth child and she was only four years old. She was in that stage of life that was so adorable. She questioned everything and wondered about the world, about boys, about snakes, rocks and still thought bugs were cool and that mud pies were yummy. David had yet to try one even with her persistent requests. David had no problem with helping her make them though. He watched her beautiful smile, her dark curls bouncing as she ran. She had such an adorable giggle. Crystal would scrunch her face up a little bit and put her hands on cheeks when she would laugh, momentarily paralyzed with happiness. It must have been nice to live such a carefree life. David watched her on the playground as she climbed up and around the plastic structure. She was so excited to slide down a three foot slide. For all David’s knowledge, it still baffled him to think of such joy to come from such little things. Then there were the hugs. Crystal gave such loving hugs. David would bend down or get on his knees and little Crystal would throw her arms around his neck and squeeze, still being tender. She would peck his cheeks with kisses and David would blow raspberries on her cheek. She would giggle sweetly. David never wanted to let her go but after a while she would go play with a squirrel or chase some butterfly into the sandbox or down the sidewalk of the park. David kept her in view. He would never let anything happen to her.
It defied all real psychological explanations to have David be such a good father after not receiving a father of his own. Still, David wanted to give back everything that he had lost. Crystal, Nathan, Stephen and Jose were the children that he would dote upon whenever possible. Nathan and Stephen were teenagers and in high school so it was more difficult to relate to them but David did his best. He had stories that were always intriguing. David could always see Crystal’s curls as she ran from tree to tree trying to catch a rather elusive squirrel. David noticed that the sky was beginning to get dark. Rain clouds were coming and they were going to need to go home to mom soon enough. David knew Crystal would ask to stay if he asked her to leave now and it wasn’t like he could really say no to such a perfect smile. David watched as a couple of runners past him. He looked out into the forest that laid to the North of the park, looking intently into it. He couldn’t see anything but he didn’t trust the unknown any more than the next person. Leave it to Crystal to let her curiosity get the best of and wonder up to complete strangers. “Excuse me!” Crystal exclaimed delightfully and a bit in an anxious tone. “But I need someone taller! I can’t seem to get up the tree and Reginald is in a tree and I can’t jump that high!” She paused, as if she recognized the fact that these people didn’t know who Reginald was. “Reginald is my squirrel that I named today! And he’s in a tree, please oh please help me get him. Dad moves so slow and he isn’t over here! Please oh please?” David, a bit uneasy began walking a little fast towards the couple. Crystal looked up at them with beaming eyes. Who could say no to that?
